چکیده

In this article, we consolidate several literature reports in an attempt to provide a structural definition of a polymer brush as a tethered polymer layer with a high grafting density of polymer chains. We will try to distinguish a brush from grafted polymer layers and coated layers and provide a reasonable approach to the description of the brush regime with a single parameter S—reduced grafting density. Furthermore, we will attempt to describe the relevance of this description to applications. This article is timely given the continuing interest relating to brushes on flat substrates, nanoparticles, and the walls of micro-channels. VC 2007Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Detection of Polymer Brushes developed via Single Crystal Growth

Single crystals consisting various surface morphologies and epitaxial structures were applied to investigate the effect of other phase regions in the vicinity of a given tethered chains-covered area having a certain molecular weight of amorphous brushes. The designed experiments demonstrated that regardless of the type of surface morphology (patterned and especial mixed-brushes, homo and co...

Nanopatterned polymer brushes: conformation, fabrication and applications.

Surfaces with end-grafted, nanopatterned polymer brushes that exhibit well-defined feature dimensions and controlled chemical and physical properties provide versatile platforms not only for investigation of nanoscale phenomena at biointerfaces, but also for the development of advanced devices relevant to biotechnology and electronics applications. In this review, we first give a brief introduc...

Structural Determination of High Density, ATRP Grown Polystyrene Brushes by Neutron Reflectivity

The development of well-controlled synthetic schemes for growing polymer brushes directly from surfaces has recently enabled very high polymer grafting densities to be explored. Here, we report on the structure of polystyrene brushes as a function of molecular weight. The brushes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at a high grafting density of 0.44 chains/nm. The dry f...

Nanostructured Single Crystals Sandwiched between Ordered/Disordered Coily and Rod Brushes

Single crystals of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-b-polystyrene (PS), PEG-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PEG-b-polycaprolactone (PCL), and polyaniline (PANI)-b-PEG-b-PANI were developed from dilute solutions and thin molten films using self-seeding methodology. The PS and PMMA grafted chains were categorized in disordered nano-brushes; however, the PCL and PANI ones were grouped in ordere...

Influence of Chain Stiffness, Grafting Density and Normal Load on the Tribological and Structural Behavior of Polymer Brushes:A Nonequilibrium-Molecular-Dynamics Study

We have performed coarse-grained molecular-dynamics simulations on both flexible and semiflexible multi-bead-spring model polymer brushes in the presence of explicit solvent particles, to explore their tribological and structural behaviors. The effect of stiffness and tethering density on equilibrium-brush height is seen to be well reproduced within a Flory-type theory. After discussing the equ...
